Frequently Asked Questions
How many names are on the wheel at once?
The wheel draws twenty segments at a time from the pool your filters create. Land on the page with All Names selected for both gender and popularity and those twenty are the current top boy names - Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, William, Henry, Lucas and so on. Tap Girl Names and the wheel reloads with Olivia, Emma, Charlotte and Amelia. Tap Unique/Rare and you get Atlas, Kai, Ezra and Silas instead, or Luna, Aurora, Isla and Freya if you also pick Girl Names. Changing any filter rebuilds the wheel instantly, so flipping between combinations is the fastest way to see a lot of names.
Can I put our own shortlist of names on the wheel?
Not on this page. The wheel runs on a built-in database of real names, because the job here is surfacing names you have not thought of yet, and there is no text box for typing your own. Build a shortlist instead by hearting names in the result pop-up; they collect in the Your Favorite Names panel below the controls. Once you are down to three or four finalists and want to spin between only those, use the custom wheel on our homepage, where you can type or paste your own entries. Plenty of couples use both: this page to generate, the custom wheel to decide.
Do my favorite names stay saved if I close the tab?
Yes. Favorites are stored in your browser on that one device, so closing the tab or shutting the laptop will not lose them - reopen the page and the list is still there. They do not sync between devices, though, so names you hearted on your phone will not appear on your partner's laptop. Two buttons fix that: Share List copies a link with your favorites built into it, so whoever opens that link gets your names loaded into their own list, and Export copies everything as plain text to paste into notes or a message. Clearing browser data, or spinning in a private window, wipes the saved list.
Are these real baby names or made-up ones?
Real names, all of them. The wheel pulls from names in actual use - the popular set mirrors what tops the US Social Security lists (Liam, Olivia, Noah, Emma), the vintage set comes from classic registers (Margaret, Frederick, Dorothy, Walter), and the rare set holds documented but uncommon picks (Caspian, Imogen, Zephyr, Beatrix). Nothing here is invented by mashing syllables together. Leave Show name meanings ticked and well-documented names arrive with their etymology, such as Kai meaning ocean in Hawaiian or Ezra meaning helper in Hebrew. Treat the popularity number in the pop-up as a rough indicator only; for an exact current rank, check the Social Security Administration's official list, updated every May.
What does Twin Mode actually do?
Twin Mode spins the wheel twice, about six seconds apart, and hands you two separate names from whatever pool your filters have loaded. Because both come out of the same bucket, the pair naturally shares an era and a formality level - two vintage names, or two rare ones - which is the coordinated effect most twin parents are after. What they usually do not want is a rhyming or same-initial pair, which gets confusing the moment you call across a playground. A fair test for the two names the wheel gives you: would you happily have picked each one on its own, for a single baby? If yes, they work as a pair.
How do I get names that start with a specific letter?
Use the Starting Letter row under the popularity buttons. It offers Any, A, B, C, D, E, J, K, L, M and S - the letters parents most often need when matching an older sibling's initial. Two things to know. The letter filters whatever is already loaded, so set gender and popularity first, then tap the letter. And the filters stack, so tapping A and then B empties the wheel, since no name starts with both; tap Any to rebuild the full pool before trying a different letter. The ... button is a placeholder for the full alphabet and is not live yet.
Should we really let a wheel choose our baby's name?
Treat it as a shortlist generator, not a decider. The method that works: sit down together, spin ten times each, and say nothing while you spin - just heart every name that makes you pause, including ones you would never have written down. Then compare what you both hearted. Names that landed on both lists are your genuine shortlist, and three to five finalists is where most parents settle before the birth. A spin that gets an instant no from you is useful too; it tells you which style you are actually ruling out, which is often harder to name than what you like.
Can we use this as a baby shower game?
It makes a decent low-effort shower activity. Set Gender to All Names and Popularity to Unique/Rare, then let each guest spin once and write whatever they land on onto a suggestion card for the parents - a spinning version of the classic name-suggestion box. A Vintage/Classic round suits older relatives, since it serves up Frederick, Harold, Walter and Albert, with Margaret, Dorothy and Ruth one tap away under Girl Names. Run the whole thing on one laptop and every hearted name gathers in the same favorites panel; at the end, Export copies the full list as text to paste straight into a message to the parents.
